Renault's new Twingo is a familiar name with buyers, but this third generation from the French car maker is radically different and a complete departure from the norm as it is rear engined and rear wheel drive. Another first for the Twingo is that it is only available as a five-door car, an attractive difference to most of its rivals in this city car class, which are only available with three.
By mounting the engine in the rear, the new Twingo is shorter at 3.595mm (11ft 8in) than its predecessor and with a longer wheelbase and short overhang front and rear, offers ample interior space within its diminutive size.
A rounded and chirpy front fascia shows off the exciting and uplifting design, bold front headlamps and front fog lights highlight the Twingo's playfull look. A choice of either a 1.0-litre 70hp engine or a turbocharged 0.9-litre developing 90hp, only available on the top of the range Dynamique model, both with a five-speed manual gearbox. The trim range comprises of Expression, Play and Dynamique. With no engine at the front, it allows the Twingo to have a great and best in class turning circle, ideal for city motoring and parking manoeuvres and the wheels can turn up to 45 degrees and return a 8.59m (28ft) turning circle. The Dynamique model with Stop/Start technology offers a CO2 figure of 95g/km, making it car tax free. The Twingo's exterior can be personalised greatly to reflect your unique style, with options on side protection strips, door mirrors which also offer a range of styles as well as colours and of course a selection of stunning body colours.
Interior space is excellent for a small car and the rear seats can be folded flat to increase load space and the front passenger seat folds forward to allow a load length to the dashboard of 2.3m (7ft 6in). The Twingo offers an easy to access storage compartment for front passengers and the illuminated glovebox locks and unlocks with the car for added space. The high seating position and good all-round visibility are plus points making the Twingo easy to drive in city traffic. The Twingo can be personalised by buyers to a great degree, to create your own bespoke version. The list is endless with combinations of interior and exterior style packs allowing you to choose instrument and vent colours, inserts on the leather steering wheel and fascia strips, with in the cabin.
Standard on all Twingo's is a connectivity via a smartphone, handled by Renault's R & GO system. A universal phone cradle plugs into the dashboard and using the radio allows access to navigation, multimedia and internet radio and is auctioned by a free-to-download app.
Safety is always a key feature of design and the Twingo has been awarded a 4 star Euro NCAP rating. Renault have designed the engine in the event of a rear end shunt, to be pushed out of harm's way under the passenger floor. Other safety features include four airbags, electronic stability control, hill start assist, emergency braking assist and tyre pressure monitoring system.
